ROUND TABLE: Drugs & Alcohol discussion with our teenaged students.
On May 27, 2006 the studio held a round table discussion session to talk about the dangers of drugs and alcohol for our teenaged students and their friends. In honor of Janine Kelker*, who was killed in a car crash involving a drunk driver in March, Sah Bum Nim welcomed the middle school and high school aged students to the round table to have a candid discussion about facts, myths, and personal stories surrounding drugs and alcohol. The evening had a very good turnout to see a presentation by Officer Rob Giglio of the Matthews Police Department, a pizza dinner, a legal presentation by Christopher J Woodyard, of Crumley and Associates, and the round table moderated by Sah Bum Nim. "My hope is that the students walked away understanding that drugs and alcohol are not necessary to have a good time, and that choosing to drink can result in terrible consequences. I also hope that they learned how important it is to accept responsibility after making one bad decision rather than making another bad decision to cover up the first. If we got that message through to one person, then this was successful and Janine's death did help somebody." -Joey Woodyard

*JANINE LEIGH KELKER 1979-2006 This event was held in memory of Janine Kelker, who was tragically killed early in the morning on March 12, 2006. Janine had been the designated driver for friends after enjoying a UNC basketball game and was struck by an alleged drunk driver at the intersection of McKee and Weddington Rd around 1:30am. Kyle Heaberlin was charged that night with DWI, his third such charged offense in recent months. In June he was charged with involuntary manslaughter and felony death by vehicle in connection with Janine's death. Janine was a gem among people. A friend of mine dating back to elementary school and into college at UNC, her smile was infectious. No matter if you spent hours with her or just a brief minute conversation, Janine always made certain to leave you smiling. Until the end of time, thinking about her will bring a smile to my face! |
